Storyline:
Adithya Varma is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language love drama film directed by Gireesaaya and produced by Mukesh Mehta under E4 Entertainment. Dhruv Vikram makes his acting debut, and Banita Sandhu makes her Tamil debut, with Priya Anand playing a supporting part. It is a remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017), directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and follows Dhruv as Adithya Varma, a high-functioning alcoholic surgeon with anger control issues. Following his lover Meera’s marriage, he pushes himself down a self-destructive road, and the film focuses on his fall and subsequent rebound.
The film was previously directed by Bala and shot between March and September 2018 under the title Varmaa; however, due to creative differences, E4 Entertainment opted to re-launch it in February 2019 with a new cast and crew, with only Dhruv and music composer Radhan remaining. The original version was shot by M. Sukumar and Sathish Suriya, but the updated version was shot by Ravi K. Chandran and Vivek Harshan. The new version, Adithya Varma, began filming in March 2019 and finished in May of same year.
The film was supposed to be released on November 8, 2019, but it was delayed owing to distribution concerns. The film was released globally on November 21, 2019, and in India the following day. The film received favourable reviews, with many applauding Dhruv’s portrayal and the adaptation from the original. Dhruv won Best Debut Actor at both the 13th Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards and the Zee Cine Awards Tamil.
