Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the 2018 Indian historical romance action drama film Padmavati. Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem of the same name, it stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, a Rajput queen noted for her beauty and the bride of Maharawal Ratan Singh, played by Shahid Kapoor. When Sultan Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, learns of her beauty, he invades her realm in order to enslave her. In supporting roles, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka appeared.
Padmaavat is one of the most costly Indian films ever filmed, with a production budget of 215 crore (US$27 million). Padmaavat, which was supposed to be released on December 1, 2017, was marred by several controversies. Its publication was postponed indefinitely due to violent protests. The film was certified by the Central Board of Film Certification in December with a few adjustments, including the addition of various disclaimers and a change from its original title Padmavati. Padmaavat was rescheduled for January 25, 2018 release in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D formats, making it the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D.
Padmaavat earned mixed to excellent reviews upon its initial release. The aesthetics, cinematography, and Singh’s portrayal of the villainous Khilji were praised by critics, but the storyline, execution, length, and adherence to regressive patriarchal mores were panned. Critics also objected to the portrayal of Khilji as the traditional villainous Muslim king and Ratan Singh as the righteous Hindu king, prompting religious communities to protest. Despite the fact that it was not distributed in several Indian states, it grossed over 585 crore (US$73 million) at the box office, making it a commercial success and the 12th highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
